The Velvet Violin presents
Little Rumba & La Gringa Negra
Sunday 04 February, 8pm. Doors open 7pm.
The Assembly Rooms, Presteigne
Little Rumba’s musicians come from very different musical backgrounds, which is why the band presents such a unique blend of styles.
The band, based in Presteigne, writes all their own music and over the years this has developed an instantly recognizable house style, which owes debts to East Europe and South America as well as jazz and blues. Recently a musician friend hearing the new album for the first time remarked, “I know what this is. It’s Tom Waits meets Tom Lehrer” and indeed the music and the lyrics possess both humour and a haunting melancholy.
La Gringa Negra, Folkloric Spanish and Latin American heritage performed by Jose Solo on nylon strings and Katie West (one half of Velvet Violin favourites Truckstop Honeymoon) on double bass. From Bolero to Bossa, Rhumba to Ranchera, this duo delivers beautifully rendered versions of classics inspired by romantic love songs from Cuba, seductively sweet bossa novas from beaches of Rio de Janeiro, to the guitars and tears of rancheras from the pre-revolutionary countryside of rural Mexico.
Dave Luke and John Hymas present another boisterous pop quiz which will no doubt include a lot of wigs, bizarre instruments and unnecessarily over dramatic versions of some poor pop star's back catalogue.
